Fine Needle AspirationA needle biopsy of the thyroid refers to using a needle to remove a small sample of tissue from your thyroid gland. The test is usually done when a lump, called a nodule, is found in the thyroid. Nodules are very common and usually do not require treatment. However, between 5% to 10% of nodules are cancerous. The biopsy procedure can take about 30 minutes and can be done in the office. If needed, ultrasound may be used to guide the biopsy. This allows biopsy of non-palpable or poorly defined nodules. Results of this test are important in determining whether or not thyroid surgery will be recommended.
